Rhone-Alps Region

The Rhone-Alps region is located on the eastern border of the country. It is named after the Rhone River and the Alps mountain range. The capital is Lyon. It is known as a gastronomic center of France. It is a wine producing area for wines such as Beaujolais, Cotes du Rhone, and Savoy. The Chartreuse liqueur is made in this region. The region is situated between Paris and the Cote d'Azur and borders Italy and Switzerland. The regionis made up of mountains, vineyards, valleys, fields of lavender and olive groves. In this region you will snow-capped mountains, rivers, and lakes. It is a great area for the person who loves the outdoors and enjoys hiking, mountain climbing, walking, and golf. There are many golf courses in this area and the largest ski area in world.

Annecy is located on the northern tip of Lake Annecy. The Annecy International Animated Film Festival is held here. There are a number of sights to see and visit in the area including chateaux and churches.

Situated at the foot of the Alps and surrounded by mountains is the town of Grenoble. There are about Rhone-Alps Grenobletwenty ski stations surrounding the city. It is an important tourist area for people who like mountain sports. There are other attractions in the city such as the ancient fortification, La Bastille, which sits on a mountainside and is visible from many places in the city. It is one of the most visited places in Grenoble and provides an excellent view of the city.

Lyon is the third largest city in France. It is a major business center. It is known for its silk and textiles. The International headquarters of Interpol is located here. It is also the home of the Lumiere brothers who invented cinema. There is a museum exhibiting their early inventions in the town. There are a number of churches in the area that are of interest. There is also a wine-producing region near Lyon. On many walls around the city you will find art work, "trompe l'oeil" walls. The Festival of Lights is held on December 8th each year to give thanks to the Virgin Mary who supposedly saved the city from a deadly plague during the Middle Ages.

Forty miles southwest of Lyon in the Massif Central Mountains is the city of Saint-Etienne. It has a number of attractions for tourists including one of the finest Museums of Modern Art. The city is often a stage in the Tour de France cycling race.

The city has maintained many of its historical buildings and is a tourist destination. Many movies are filmed here.
