The two main cities of the
Lorraine region are Metz and Nancy. The region borders on three
countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. It is known for
its cuisine and a famous dish, Quiche Lorraine. There are many
vineyards in this region and its best known wine is the pinot
noir of Toul. Lorraine is the birthplace of Joan of Arc.
Metz is the capital of the
Lorraine region. It is famous for its yellow limestone
architecture. It also has numerous parks, gardens,
and playgrounds. There are a number of churches
dating from the 7th century. A Gothic cathedral, St.
Etienne, features stained glass windows designed by Marc
Chagall. Every other year, Metz hosts the largest hot air
balloon festival in Europe.
A group of artists and architects founded by
the glass master and furniture maker Emile Galle worked in the
Art Noveau style. The group known as the "Ecole de Nancy" made
Nancy a major center
of art and architecture. Attractions include the Cathedral
of Nancy which is an example of 18th century architecture, a
botanical garden, an aquarium, and other public gardens and
