Languedoc-Roussillon Region

The Languedoc-Roussillon region is wine producing country. It has more vineyards than Bordeaux.

The French town of Carcassonne is divided into two parts: the fort Cite de Carcassonne and the lower city, the ville basse. The area is the center of a major wine growing region. Many tourists come to the area to visit the fort and take a boat cruise on the Canal du Midi.

Languedoc-Roussillon Region MontpellierA major attraction in the town of Montpellier is its botanical garden which was created about 1593. Each summer a music festival, Festival de Radio France et Montepllier is held. It features classical music and jazz. There are usually about one hundred events and most of them are free. They are held in the courtyards around the city or in concert halls.

One of the more popular tourist areas in this region is the town of Nimes. There are remains from the Roman Empire including an amphitheater which is used as a bull fighting ring and concert arena. The area is known for its textiles, especially denim.
