Centre is a new region in
France, but is not actually the center of the country. It is
northwest of the actual center. The capital is Orleans. The
main area in this region is the Loire Valley and the famous
chateaus of the region attract many visitors.
The city of Bourges is located
on the Yeore River. Its cathedral, the Gothic Cathedral of
Saint Etienne is a World Heritage site and is considered the
earliest example of high gothic style of the 13th century.
Another attraction is the ruins of the Gallo-Roman walls.
Located 59 miles from Paris,
Chartres is located on the left bank of the
Eure River. Its main attraction is the Cathedral of Chartres
(Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Chartres) which is considered to be
the finest Gothic cathedral in France. It is a world heritage
site. There is also a museum and workshop devoted to stained
glass art, Le Centre International du Vitroil.
Between Orleans and the Atlantic coast is the
city of Tours. The region around Tours is
known for its wines. The area is also known as The Garden of
France (Le Jardin de la France). It is famous for the old city
known as Le Vieux Tours. The old part of the city has medieval
half-timbered houses and a public square with pubs and
restaurants. There are also weekly markets.
